Abandon hope…but not just yet


Beginning to lose a bit of will with this process. I obviously will not be starting back anywhere this week and today hits the six week mark in my attempt to return. It has got such that I have been thinking of pulling out entirely and joining the volunteer NHS effort and offer some support that way.

I have had a couple of phone calls this week from an NHS recruitment worker with the suggestion that I might consider a start as a staff nurse with a local district nurse team in north Edinburgh. I am happy to do this with the support of the DN team but would still need some basic stuff to get started such as some uniforms. I await further contact with more information.

I continue to progress with some hope but it is diminishing.

Time for a new update… Vaccinations continue apace at Leith. The very busy clinics of a month or so ago are beginning to quieten down lately. I presume we will soon start to do boosters and flu jabs by appointment before too long as drop-in first and second jabs appear to reducing in number as is only to be expected. AstraZenica ascendant and QMU no more

After our initial return to Pfizer we have switched once again to AstraZenica. This has roughly corresponded with when we made the switch in March so that we can continue to provide second doses to the same cohort of people. As we power through May we are now regularly seeing 700 cars each day and delivering first and second doses on a ratio of about 1:5. As a result I have increased my hours for the next month or so from 16 to 24 hours a week. It all feels very well paced, useful and satisfying. We mostly see people in their fifties and upwards coming for their second jag and some younger people for their first. However AstraZenica is not now offered to anyone under 30 and anyone under 40 can choose to have it or opt to be sent elsewhere for an alternative. So long and thanks for all the fish

  Well that's a bit odd. I think I may have completed my last shift as a vaccinator at the weekend there... I finally managed to get some movement on joining the staff bank. Following some excellent advice from wiser colleagues I made direct email contact with some NHS Lothian high heid yins and lo and behold it worked. I should be part of the staff bank before the end of the month. It's a shame it took so long and required such escalation but hey ho, that's sometimes how it needs to go. So, why have I finished so abruptly? Well, I am on annual leave for the next two weeks, my contract ends at the end of March, hopefully smoothly eliding into a bank contract and I have 24hrs of annual leave remaining...which pretty much covers the remainder of March. So...that's it. I'm done. At least for the time being. My last couple of shifts over the weekend were fairly quiet and uneventful.
